LG Chem will establish its own 'global standard' for environmental safety and expand it to its global operations.

In a related development, LG Chem said it will redefine environmental safety standards and drastically strengthen its management system for all businesses worldwide.

This is a follow-up to the "Environmental Safety Enhancement Measures" announced in May, and LG Chem is currently operating an "M-Project" consisting of in-house environmental safety and process technology experts and outside specialized agencies with the aim of zero serious environmental safety accidents by 2021.

LG Chem plans to strengthen its own 'global standard' for environmental safety, which will be applied to its global operations, to the highest level in the world, and to manage it as a global standard beyond complying with local regulations.

First of all, LG Chem completed emergency diagnosis of high-risk processes and facilities at 37 businesses worldwide (15 domestic and 22 overseas) and drew a total of 590 improvements.

LG Chem is carrying out an additional 81 billion won ($68 million) worth of environmental safety investments this year alone in order to take immediate action on the improvements it has drawn up.

In the case of precision diagnosis currently being conducted with outside professional organizations, the company plans to complete all of its 37 business sites worldwide by the end of this year.

Shin said, "We have been taking fundamental measures against recent accidents and determined that there is no future if we fail to correct environmental safety. We will make all-out efforts to embody the high-intensity environmental safety policy that we have prepared based on the spirit that it will not operate if it is not safe."
